Professor Patricia Leighton
Having retired from the University of Glamorgan last year, Professor Patricia Leighton was the Jean Monnet Professor of European Law and is now Emeritus Professor of Employment Law. She has also been a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe, Bruges for whom she has undertaken a number of EC funded projects and has worked with EU applicant states in the field of employment policy and law.
She is an experienced employment lawyer. She has undertaken many research projects for international and national governments and other organisations, including the ILO, the European Commission and UK government departments, for private sector organisations and professional bodies. Her work has focused on employment relationships, flexible working and on diversity and opportunity at work.
She has a particular professional and academic interest in contracting/freelance work and agency working. She is passionate about the need to ensure proper recognition and support for such ways of working. She is currently involved with colleagues from Monash University, Australia, in developing a specialist institute to research and develop understanding of such work and the promotion of best practice. She has published sixteen books and many articles for both academic and practitioner markets, and has served on the editorial boards and edited many leading journals, including Human Resources, Personnel Today, Employer's Law and The Law Teacher.
She has acted as an advisor to policy makers in the UK, the European Commission and government departments of EU member and applicant states. She has also been a consultant and trainer to many professional bodies and individual employers, including the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, the largest HR body in the EU, Capita plc, Falconbury Ltd and is an advisor to LegalTraining TV Ltd. She has long had a particular interest in the training and professional development of lawyers and HR managers and has served on a number of regulatory and professional bodies in the UK. She is a qualified teacher in the UK and a member of the Strategy Group of the UK Centre for Legal Education. She is a trustee of Working Families, a leading UK work-life balance charity and actively supports its work.
